A Crab Feast (Kansai, Japan Trip 2012, Day 1)

I arrived in Osaka city in the evening. After settling down at the hotel, it was time for dinner. Since it’s our first night in Osaka, my friend suggested to eat something special – crab feast. We tried that in Hokkaido and was curious to know if Osaka’s is as good or even better.

We decided to eat at the very popular Kani Douraku’s (かに道楽) main restaurant (本店) at Dotonbori (道頓堀) as our hotel is nearby. The restaurant was full-house and we were asked to wait for about 45 minutes. As we are really big fans of crabs, we decided to shop in the vicinity while waiting.

The crab feast consists of various Japanese dishes made with crabmeat such as steamed crab legs with cheese fondue, crabmeat chawan mushi (steamed egg), crabmeat sushi, crabmeat tempura (fried crabmeat with batter) and crabmeat rice bowl. It also comes with a bowl of clear soup and green tea ice cream. All these come at a price of 4900 yen. Not cheap but there are a lot of dishes in the set!

The crab feast was good but I think I still prefer Hokkaido’s as theirs are fresher.

Kansai (Japan) Trip Itinerary

I went on an 18-day trip to Kansai, Japan during late March and early April. This trip is a Hanami (Sakura or cherry blossoms viewing) trip, so we have to monitor the blooming period of the sakura and make sure we are in either Osaka or Kyoto during that time. We checked the blooming period from Japan-guide.com. They have a page reporting on the status of the cherry blossoms in various parts of Japan.

Here’s the details of our itinerary. Hope that it may serve as a reference for those of you who are interested in going to the Kansai, Japan.

We based ourselves in Osaka most of the time and make day trips out to different destinations. This is made possible with the two 3-day Kansai Thru Pass that we’ve purchased. We planned our “expensive trips” during the days we use the passes so that it’s more worthy.

A Themed Italian/French Restaurant by Taiwan’s No. 1 Idol (Taiwan 2011, Day 14)

Who is Taiwan’s No. 1 Idol? That would have to be Jay Chou (周杰伦). He’s also known as Mr J to his fans and the media. He’s a very talented singer cum song writer. He composes most of the songs in his albums and I like listening to his songs. He started acting a few years back. His acting skill is average, so, I still prefer to hear him sing.

There is one particular movie that I like, Secret (不能说的秘密). The story was written by Jay and he acted as the male lead too. Not only that, he directed the show. I like the movie because of the unexpected twist at the end of the movie. Anyway, I’ll not dwell further into the movie as that’s not what I want to blog about.

Jay Chou has opened a themed restaurant, Mr J Restaurant II (意法厨房II) after the movie. One can see large posters of the movie and props used, in the restaurant. The food is mainly Italian or French, not too bad but I won’t say fantastic. However, it’s a must-visit place for Jay’s fans!

P.S: This is my last entry for my Taiwan trip 2011. I’ll start writing about my Japan trip after this.
